SARS-CoV-2 Antigen-specific Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs) are a cellular therapy consisting of T cells that specifically target SARS-CoV-2 viral proteins. These cells are designed to enhance cellular immunity in high-risk COVID-19 patients by directly eliminating virally infected cells. The therapy involves collecting T cells from convalescent COVID-19 patients or unexposed individuals, expanding them ex vivo, and then administering them to patients. Clinical testing has shown these cells can recognize and kill cells expressing SARS-CoV-2 proteins, rapidly eliminate viral load, and persist in the body for months after infusion. The therapy has demonstrated potential advantages over other COVID-19 treatments by targeting multiple viral proteins (including S, M, and N proteins), potentially maintaining effectiveness against viral variants that have mutations in the spike protein.
