The SARS-CoV-2 beta variant RBD mRNA vaccine is an mRNA-based vaccine designed to combat COVID-19, specifically targeting the Beta variant of SARS-CoV-2. It consists of messenger RNA (mRNA) that encodes the Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) of the Beta variant's spike protein, encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for delivery. Upon intramuscular administration, host cells translate the mRNA to produce the Beta variant RBD protein. This protein then acts as an antigen, stimulating the immune system to generate both humoral (antibody) and cellular (T-cell) responses. The vaccine aims to induce neutralizing antibodies and T-cells that can recognize and neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 Beta variant, and potentially other emerging variants, thereby providing protection against infection and disease. It is also designed to overcome immune imprinting caused by prior exposure to ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strains or vaccines. The vaccine has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials as a booster dose.
