Overview

SARS-CoV-2 omicron virus, specifically the BA.5 challenge strain, is a characterized viral isolate used in human challenge clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of vaccines and therapeutics. Developed by hVIVO, this strain is administered to healthy, previously vaccinated or infected volunteers in a controlled environment to study the pathogenicity, viral shedding kinetics, and immune response to the Omicron variant. These studies are designed to establish a standardized model for testing next-generation medical countermeasures against specific variants of concern. The BA.5 lineage is characterized by multiple mutations in the spike protein that enhance immune evasion and transmissibility compared to earlier SARS-CoV-2 variants.
