The SARS-CoV-2 recombinant spike protein is a key component in many COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics. It is a glycoprotein that mediates viral entry into host cells by binding to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. As an antigen, it elicits an immune response, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cells, thereby preventing or mitigating SARS-CoV-2 infection. Various formulations exist, including nanoparticle vaccines, and some are developed using insect cells or plant-based systems.
