SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells THI-COV is an investigational allogeneic, HLA-matched, 'off-the-shelf' adoptive T-cell immunotherapy developed by the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute for the treatment of active SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) in immunosuppressed adults at high risk of severe disease. The therapy consists of donor-derived, ex vivo-expanded SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells generated from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of COVID-19-recovered donors. These cells are selected and expanded using custom-designed peptide pools targeting immunodominant SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens, including the nucleocapsid, ORF3a, and other structural or non-structural proteins. By administering these HLA-matched antiviral T cells, the therapy aims to reconstitute cellular immunity and reduce viral load in patients who cannot mount an adequate immune response on their own.
