Overview

Satsuma citrus polysaccharide is a bioactive carbohydrate polymer extracted from the pulp of the Satsuma mandarin (*Citrus unshiu*). It is primarily investigated for its therapeutic potential in inflammatory bowel diseases, specifically ulcerative colitis. The compound functions as a prebiotic and anti-inflammatory agent that restores intestinal barrier integrity and balances gut microbiota. In preclinical models, it has been shown to selectively enrich beneficial bacteria such as *Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group* and promote the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including propionate and butyrate. These metabolic changes contribute to the reinforcement of the physical gut barrier by up-regulating tight junction proteins like ZO-1 and Occludin, as well as Mucin-2 (MUC2). Additionally, it helps suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 while enhancing anti-inflammatory markers like IL-10.
