Saussurea costus root extract is a botanical preparation derived from the roots of the Himalayan medicinal plant *Saussurea costus* (also known as *Dolomiaea costus*). The extract contains bioactive sesquiterpene lactones, primarily costunolide and dehydrocostus lactone, which exhibit potent anti-neoplastic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. In preclinical models of breast cancer, the extract has demonstrated the ability to inhibit tumor growth by suppressing pro-inflammatory signaling pathways (NF-κB and TNF-α), reducing cellular proliferation markers (Ki-67 and PCNA), and inhibiting metastasis (MMP-9) and neovascularization (VEGF). Furthermore, it induces apoptosis through the modulation of the p53/Bax/Bcl-2 axis and activation of caspase-3. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, it is also investigated for its potential to mitigate oxidative stress and protect liver and kidney function during oncological treatment.
