Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Saw palmetto fruit extract is an herbal preparation derived from the ripe berries of the *Serenoa repens* (also known as *Sabal serrulata*) palm tree. The primary active constituents are fatty acids and phytosterols—most notably β-sitosterol—which are believed to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase and thus reduce the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. This mechanism has led to its use in alternative medicine for urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as well as for reducing complications from prostate surgery such as blood loss and recovery time. Other claimed uses include treatment of hair loss and pelvic pain; however clinical evidence supporting these uses is limited or inconclusive. Saw palmetto fruit extract is not FDA-approved for any indication but is widely marketed as a dietary supplement in various forms including capsules and tablets[1][2][3][4][5][7].
