Saxagliptin + vitamin D is a combination therapy consisting of the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor saxagliptin and vitamin D (commonly as cholecalciferol/vitamin D3). This combination has been studied as an adjunct to standard diabetes therapies (such as metformin and/or insulin) in adult-onset autoimmune type 1 diabetes and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). Saxagliptin works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, thereby increasing levels of incretin hormones like GLP-1 and GIP, which enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and suppress glucagon release. Vitamin D is thought to have immunomodulatory effects that may help preserve pancreatic beta-cell function. Clinical studies suggest that this combination may better preserve β-cell function compared to conventional therapy or saxagliptin alone, particularly in patients with higher glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody (GADA) levels[1][2][3].
