Overview

SB-061 is a **therapeutic bioconjugate** engineered as a **functional mimic of aggrecan**, a key proteoglycan in the cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM). Its design is intended to directly target and bind the degrading extracellular matrix in osteoarthritic joints to **interrupt the cycle of inflammation and cartilage breakdown**. By replacing or mimicking aggrecan, SB-061 aims to reduce joint degradation, symptomatic pain, and functional decline through intra-articular (joint) administration. SB-061 does not function as a systemic anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory agent, but rather as a **localized ECM modulator** and potential disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug. Clinical trials have shown it to be well-tolerated, but recent phase IIb data indicate no statistically significant improvement over placebo in knee osteoarthritis pain or function endpoints.
