SB-121 is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) being developed by Scioto Biosciences for the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The drug utilizes the company's proprietary Activated Bacterial Therapeutics (ABT) platform, which involves priming the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus reuteri* to form a biofilm on polysaccharide microspheres (Sephadex). This 'biofilm-primed' state is intended to enhance the survival, delivery, and colonization of the bacteria within the gastrointestinal tract compared to standard probiotic formulations. SB-121 targets the gut-brain axis; specifically, *L. reuteri* is known to stimulate the production and release of oxytocin via the vagus nerve. By increasing oxytocin levels, SB-121 aims to improve social communication and behavioral symptoms in individuals with autism.
