SB-3CT is a potent and selective small molecule inhibitor of the gelatinases **matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9)**, also known as gelatinases. It is a thiirane-based compound that operates via a unique mechanism: the thiirane ring is opened by the active site of MMP-2/9, generating a thiolate that acts as a tight-binding inhibitor. SB-3CT demonstrates neuroprotective and anti-tumor effects in animal models. It has shown efficacy in reducing neuronal apoptosis and tissue damage in **stroke**, **subarachnoid hemorrhage**, **traumatic brain injury**, and **spinal cord injury**, as well as reducing **tumor growth** and enhancing anti-tumor immunity in preclinical cancer models. Its primary action is through the inhibition of extracellular matrix degradation by blocking MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity, which limits tissue damage in neurological injuries and modulates immune responses and PD-L1 expression in tumors[1][2][3][4][5].
