Overview

SB-CAR19 is an investigational autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy developed by the Fundacion de Investigacion Biomedica de Salamanca. It is designed to target the CD19 antigen, which is widely expressed on the surface of B-cell malignancies. Unlike most commercially available CAR-T therapies that utilize viral vectors (lentivirus or retrovirus) for gene delivery, SB-CAR19 is engineered using the non-viral Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposon system. This system uses a cut-and-paste mechanism to integrate the CAR gene into the T-cell genome, offering a potentially more cost-effective and safer manufacturing profile. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for various relapsed or refractory B-cell lymphomas, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), mantle cell lymphoma, and follicular lymphoma.
