Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SB019 is an investigational **intranasal small molecule antiviral** developed by Novan for the treatment of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. It is an intranasal formulation of **berdazimer sodium**, a nitric oxide-releasing compound derived from Novan's NITRICIL platform. The therapeutic rationale is that local nitric oxide delivery in the nasal cavity can exert antiviral activity by disrupting viral protein function and inhibiting viral replication, thereby potentially reducing infection and transmission. Publicly described data indicate positive preclinical activity in animal models of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and favorable intranasal GLP toxicology and tolerability findings, with the program reported around 2021 to 2022 as preparing for IND submission and planned Phase 1 evaluation in healthy volunteers.
