SB24 is a novel anti-CD39 nanobody being investigated for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It targets CD39 (ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase-1), an ectoenzyme that plays a key role in the ATP-adenosine pathway, which contributes to an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. By blocking CD39, SB24 inhibits the degradation of extracellular ATP into adenosine, thereby reversing adenosine-mediated immune exhaustion. This blockade enhances the proliferation and cytotoxic activity of CD8+ and CD4+ T cells and increases the lysis of AML blasts. The drug is currently in preclinical development, with research primarily conducted at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
