Overview

SB26 (also known as TAK-671) is an ulinastatin-Fc fusion protein developed through a strategic collaboration between Samsung Bioepis and Takeda Pharmaceutical. It is designed to treat severe acute pancreatitis and other inflammatory conditions, such as COVID-19, by inhibiting various proteases involved in the inflammatory cascade. Ulinastatin is a naturally occurring urinary trypsin inhibitor; by fusing it to an immunoglobulin Fc region, the developers aimed to improve its pharmacokinetic profile and extend its half-life. In 2017, the companies entered a risk-sharing agreement, but Takeda later opted out of the pancreatitis program, transferring the rights to Samsung Bioepis.
