Overview

SB36 is a biosimilar candidate of vedolizumab (Entyvio), a humanized monoclonal antibody developed by Samsung Bioepis in partnership with Sandoz. It is designed to target the alpha-4-beta-7 integrin, a protein expressed on the surface of specific circulating white blood cells that migrate into the gastrointestinal tract. By inhibiting the binding of alpha-4-beta-7 integrin to mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1), SB36 prevents the infiltration of pro-inflammatory lymphocytes into the gut mucosa, thereby reducing the chronic inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel diseases. The candidate is intended for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and is part of a global licensing agreement where Samsung Bioepis handles development and manufacturing while Sandoz manages commercialization in most global markets.
