Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sb_scFv-A-HL is an engineered probiotic therapeutic consisting of the yeast *Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii* (Sb) genetically modified to secrete a high-affinity single-chain variable fragment (scFv) designated scFv-A-HL. This secreted scFv specifically targets and neutralizes the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Developed by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, Sb_scFv-A-HL is designed for oral administration to achieve localized delivery of neutralizing antibodies directly within the gastrointestinal tract. This approach aims to prevent viral entry, mitigate acute gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, and potentially target persistent viral reservoirs implicated in long COVID, while bypassing the degradation and systemic limitations of traditional intravenous biologics.
