SBFI1143 is a small molecule inhibitor specifically targeting Fatty Acid Binding Protein 5 (FABP5). FABP5 acts as an intracellular chaperone for fatty acids, regulating lipid metabolism, cell signaling, and growth. In the context of multiple myeloma (MM), high FABP5 expression is associated with poor prognosis. SBFI1143 has demonstrated potent in vitro cytotoxicity and induction of apoptosis across various human and mouse myeloma cell lines, showing higher efficacy than related compounds like SBFI103. While it has shown significant promise in impeding myeloma cell fitness, current research indicates it requires further formulation for effective in vivo delivery.
