Overview

SBP-9330 is an orally administered small molecule drug developed as a first-in-class therapeutic for smoking cessation. It acts as a selective positive allosteric modulator (PAM) of the metabotropic glutamate receptor 2 (mGlu2), targeting neuronal signaling pathways underlying addictive behaviors. By modulating mGlu2, SBP-9330 reduces levels of glutamate—a neurotransmitter linked to addiction and relapse—thereby aiming to help individuals quit smoking. The compound was discovered by researchers at Sanford Burnham Prebys and is being developed in collaboration with Camino Pharma and the University of California, San Diego. Preclinical studies demonstrated reduced nicotine self-administration in animal models, and Phase 1 clinical trials have shown that the drug is safe and well-tolerated in humans. There is also interest in exploring its potential for other substance use disorders such as cocaine, opioid, and methamphetamine addiction[1][2][6][7][8].
