SBT-20 is an investigational mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide (Phe-D-Arg-Phe-Lys-NH2) from the Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptide class, developed by Stealth BioTherapeutics to improve mitochondrial bioenergetics and reduce oxidative stress in diseases involving mitochondrial dysfunction.[3][5][7][14] It is a small, cell-permeable peptide that accumulates at the inner mitochondrial membrane where it reduces reactive oxygen species, normalizes electron transport chain function, and improves ATP production, thereby preserving cellular viability and limiting tissue injury.[3][6][14] SBT-20 has been evaluated clinically in a Phase 1/2 trial (CHALLENGE-HD) in early-stage Huntington’s disease and preclinically in models of myocardial ischemia, chronic renal failure, and renal ischemia-reperfusion injury, where it reduced infarct size, attenuated inflammation and apoptosis, and improved organ function.[1][3][6][8][10][11]
