Overview

SBT-589 is a novel small molecule drug candidate developed by Stealth BioTherapeutics for the treatment of Friedreich's ataxia (FA), a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by mitochondrial dysfunction. The compound specifically targets mitochondrial pathways essential for cellular health and energy production, which are impaired in FA. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that SBT-589 improves bioenergetics in patient-derived cells and isolated heart mitochondria, reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, ameliorates pathology associated with iron dysregulation, and displays cardioprotective effects—such as reducing cardiac hypertrophy and delaying mortality—in mouse models of FA cardiomyopathy. Ongoing research is evaluating its potential to address both cardiac and neurological manifestations of FA by directly targeting mitochondrial dysfunction[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].
