Overview

sc-LCPUFA is a specific combination of n-3 and n-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), comprising eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and stearidonic acid (SDA). It was investigated as a dietary supplement at a total daily dose of 1.19 g for its potential broncho-protective and anti-inflammatory effects in patients with exercise-induced asthma (EIA). The proposed mechanism of action involves the reduction of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and cytokines through competitive inhibition of arachidonic acid metabolism at cyclooxygenase-2 and 5-lipoxygenase enzymes, as well as the generation of specialized pro-resolving mediators. However, a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT02410096) found that sc-LCPUFA supplementation did not provide any significant broncho-protective or anti-inflammatory benefits for EIA.
