SC599 is a live attenuated vaccine candidate developed for the prevention of shigellosis, specifically targeting *Shigella dysenteriae* type 1. It was engineered by deleting key virulence and survival genes (virG/icsA, ent, and fep) from a wild-type *S. dysenteriae* 1 strain to reduce pathogenicity while retaining immunogenicity. The vaccine was developed by the Pasteur Institute and advanced to early-phase clinical trials as an oral monovalent live attenuated vaccine. Its mechanism of action is immunostimulation—eliciting an immune response against Shigella infection. Development has been discontinued after phase 1 clinical evaluation.
