Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Scandium-44 ($^{44}\text{Sc}$) is an investigational positron-emitting radiometal with a half-life of approximately 4 hours (3.97–4.04 h) and a high positron branching ratio of about 94%. It decays to non-toxic calcium-44. Due to its favorable physical properties, including a longer half-life than gallium-68 ($^{68}\text{Ga}$), scandium-44 is highly suitable for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, allowing for longer imaging windows and centralized distribution. Its coordination chemistry is similar to radiolanthanides, enabling it to be conjugated to various targeting vectors (such as peptides, small molecules, and antibodies) using chelators like DOTA or NODAGA. Scandium-44 is also utilized as a diagnostic partner for therapeutic radionuclides like scandium-47 or lutetium-177 in theranostic applications.
