Scandium-47 (47Sc) is a beta-emitting radioisotope being developed as a theranostic agent for targeted cancer therapy. It has a half-life of 3.35 days and emits beta radiation (average energy 162 keV) suitable for therapeutic applications and gamma emissions (159 keV) suitable for SPECT imaging. Scandium-47 is frequently discussed as part of a theranostic pair with scandium-44 or scandium-43 (used for PET imaging), allowing the same chemical targeting agent to be used for both diagnosis and therapy. The radioisotope is typically chelated to targeting molecules, such as peptides or antibodies, using bifunctional chelators like DOTA. It is currently being investigated in preclinical research for the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors, prostate cancer, and other malignancies.
