Scavidin is a recombinant, soluble version of the human scavenger receptor CD163, developed by Scancell. Originally engineered as a therapeutic intervention for severe COVID-19, it was designed to bind and neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, thereby preventing viral entry and the subsequent hyper-inflammatory response known as a cytokine storm. Beyond its antiviral potential, Scavidin mimics the natural scavenger functions of CD163 by binding to and clearing pro-inflammatory mediators such as hemoglobin-haptoglobin complexes. This mechanism makes it a candidate for treating other systemic inflammatory conditions, including sepsis and cytokine release syndrome, where it acts as a decoy receptor to dampen overactive immune responses and prevent organ damage. The protein was developed using Scancell's proprietary AvidiMab platform to enhance its binding avidity and therapeutic efficacy.
