SCD-101 is an orally administered botanical drug candidate developed for the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD). It is derived from the roots of the West African plant *Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides* (formerly *Fagara zanthoxyloides*). The drug demonstrates anti-sickling activity by improving red blood cell (RBC) morphology and reducing RBC adhesion, potentially through membrane stabilization or intracellular effects, rather than direct hemoglobin binding or alteration of oxygen affinity. In Phase 1b clinical trials, SCD-101 was reported to be well-tolerated and associated with dose-dependent reductions in chronic pain and fatigue, as well as improved sleep and ulcer healing in patients with homozygous (SS) sickle cell disease or S/beta0 thalassemia.
