scd1 siRNA is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to silence the expression of Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase-1 (SCD-1), an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) such as oleate and palmitoleate. Research conducted at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA suggests that SCD-1 upregulation in enterocytes, potentially driven by a 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE)-enriched diet, leads to increased circulating MUFAs. These lipids induce pulmonary artery endothelial cell (PAEC) dysfunction and promote smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation, key mechanisms in the pathophysiology of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). By silencing SCD-1, this siRNA aims to reduce MUFA production and mitigate the inflammatory and proliferative pathways contributing to vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension.
