SCH 532706 is an investigational second-generation small molecule CCR5 (C-C chemokine receptor type 5) antagonist developed by Schering-Plough for the treatment of CCR5-tropic HIV-1 infection. It functions as a viral entry inhibitor by binding to the CCR5 co-receptor on host cells, thereby preventing the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120 from interacting with the receptor and blocking viral entry. In clinical development, SCH 532706 was evaluated in Phase I studies, often co-administered with ritonavir to enhance its pharmacokinetic profile. While it demonstrated potent anti-HIV activity and was generally well-tolerated in early monotherapy trials, it did not progress to late-stage clinical development or approval.
