SCH708980 is a humanized anti-interleukin 10 (IL-10) monoclonal antibody developed as an anti-immunosuppressive agent. Its primary mechanism of action is the inhibition of IL-10, a cytokine known to suppress immune responses. By blocking IL-10 activity, SCH708980 aims to prevent immune suppression and potentially improve outcomes in diseases where immunosuppression is detrimental, such as visceral leishmaniasis. The drug has been investigated primarily for use in combination with AmBisome (liposomal amphotericin B) for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis. It is administered intravenously and classified as a large molecule biologic[2][4][5]. Development was led by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)[2][7].
