Overview

**Schinifoline** is a natural alkaloid, specifically a quinolinone derivative, originally isolated from Zanthoxylum schinifolium and also found in Zanthoxylum simulans and related species[2][6]. It is characterized chemically as 2-heptyl-1-methylquinolin-4-one (C17H23NO, MW 257.37). Schinifoline demonstrates cytotoxic activity and selective antibacterial properties, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria[6]. In preclinical studies, schinifoline has shown the ability to induce apoptosis, arrest the cell cycle (notably increasing G2/M phase), and sensitize cancer cells (such as A549 lung cancer cells) to radiation, enhancing radiosensitivity in vitro[1][6]. There are also reports of antifungal activity against Candida albicans[3]. Mechanistically, schinifoline’s effects are associated with cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis, but its precise molecular targets remain uncharacterized. No evidence to date supports clinical use; all information is derived from in vitro and preclinical studies.
