Overview
Schisandra chinensis blood-activating formula is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal composition developed by Shanghai Children's Hospital for the treatment of pediatric primary nephrotic syndrome. The formula is based on the TCM principle of "activating blood" (Huo Xue) to improve renal microcirculation and "tonifying the kidney" to reduce proteinuria. It is primarily investigated as an adjunctive therapy to be used in combination with Western immunosuppressants like rituximab to reduce relapse rates and improve clinical efficacy in children with hormone-dependent minimal change disease. The titular ingredient, *Schisandra chinensis* (Wuweizi), is known for its immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to help stabilize the glomerular filtration barrier and mitigate the side effects of long-term steroid or immunosuppressive therapy.
