Overview
Schisandra sphenanthera, also known as Nan-wuweizi, is a botanical extract derived from the dried ripe fruit of the *Schisandra sphenanthera* plant, a member of the Magnoliaceae family. It is being developed by Suzhou Siyuan Pharmaceutical Technology Co., Ltd. as 'Nanwuweizi Soft Capsules' for the treatment of insomnia, specifically the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome pattern known as 'liver depression transforming into fire.' The extract's primary active components are lignans, most notably schisandrin and Schisandrin B, which exert sedative and hypnotic effects. Its mechanism of action involves the upregulation of GABA-A receptor expression and the modulation of the GABA/glutamate ratio in the brain, thereby enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission and promoting sleep.
