schisandrin A

Schisandrin A is a natural dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan and one of the major bioactive components isolated from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis. It exhibits multiple pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and anti-diabetic effects. Mechanistically, schisandrin A modulates oxidative stress by enhancing antioxidant enzymes and reducing reactive oxygen species. It exerts anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating signaling pathways such as the NF-κB pathway. In neurological models, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and protects neurons by reducing glutamate-induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and apoptosis.
