Schisandrin A is a natural dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan and one of the major bioactive components isolated from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis. It exhibits multiple pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, anticancer, and anti-diabetic effects. Mechanistically, schisandrin A modulates oxidative stress by enhancing antioxidant enzymes and reducing reactive oxygen species. It exerts anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating signaling pathways such as the NF-κB pathway. In neurological models, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and protects neurons by reducing glutamate-induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. In preclinical studies, it also shows protective effects in models of liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. Its molecular formula is C24H32O6 and it is used predominantly in research settings as a purified phytochemical derived from S. chinensis[3][4][8][12][13].
