Schisandrin C is a naturally occurring dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan isolated from Schisandra chinensis, traditionally used in East Asian medicine. It is classified as a hydrolyzable tannin with the molecular formula C22H24O6 and a molecular weight of 384.43. Schisandrin C has demonstrated a variety of pharmacological activities including hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, and antitumor effects. Mechanistically, recent preclinical studies show that schisandrin C activates the cGAS-STING pathway, increasing type I interferon (IFN) responses—resulting in enhanced CD8+ T cell and NK cell infiltration and activation, thereby demonstrating antitumor immunity and increased chemotherapeutic sensitivity in breast and colon cancer animal models. Additionally, it has shown potential benefits in hyperglycemia by promoting insulin secretion and improving glucose uptake, as well as neuroprotection via reduction of oxidative stress and intracellular calcium overload[1][3][9][14].
