Overview

Schistosoma mansoni soluble egg antigen (SEA) is a complex mixture of proteins, glycoproteins, polysaccharides, and glycolipids extracted from homogenized eggs of the parasitic helminth Schistosoma mansoni[1][7]. SEA contains hundreds of components—many highly glycosylated—that are secreted by the eggs and play a central role in modulating host immune responses during infection[1][3][5]. Key constituents include immunomodulatory proteins such as omega-1 (a T2 ribonuclease), IPSE/alpha-1 (an interleukin-4-inducing principle), Sm-p40 (major egg antigen), and various micro-exon gene proteins (MEGs)[8]. Mechanistically, SEA skews immune responses toward Th2 dominance while suppressing Th1/Th17 pro-inflammatory pathways; it also promotes regulatory B cell and T cell development via effects on dendritic cells and macrophages[5][8]. These properties make it both a driver of schistosome-induced pathology (e.g., granulomatous inflammation) and an experimental tool for studying immunoregulation. Clinically, SEA is widely used as an antigen in serological assays for diagnosing schistosomiasis due to its strong immunogenicity[2][6].
