A **veterinary recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate** directed against **Schmallenberg virus**, built around the viral envelope glycoprotein **Gc**, particularly the immunogenic amino-terminal head or head-stalk region that contains major neutralizing epitopes. It was developed in preclinical research programs including groups at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut and collaborators as a **DIVA-compatible** alternative to whole-virus vaccines for preventing Schmallenberg virus infection and associated reproductive disease in ruminants such as cattle and sheep. The intended mechanism is induction of neutralizing anti-Gc antibodies that block viral entry and infection; published studies showed that some Gc-domain constructs could protect experimental animals, while other baculovirus-expressed Gc subunit formulations in cattle were immunogenic but did not reliably prevent viremia after challenge.
