Scirpus maritimus extract is an aqueous preparation derived from the shoot system of the perennial aquatic plant *Scirpus maritimus* (also known as *Bolboschoenus maritimus* or Sea Club-rush). The extract is characterized by a high concentration of bioactive secondary metabolites, including phenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and steroids. Research indicates that the extract possesses potent antioxidant, antiparasitic, antibacterial, and antineoplastic properties. Its mechanism of action in cancer cells involves the induction of apoptosis via the intrinsic mitochondrial pathway, marked by increased mitochondrial membrane permeability and the subsequent release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. In bacterial pathogens, the extract demonstrates efficacy by causing DNA damage and disrupting plasma membrane integrity, leading to electrolyte leakage and inhibition of biofilm formation. It has shown promising in vitro activity against various parasitic strains, including *Plasmodium falciparum* and *Opisthorchis viverrini*, as well as a range of gastrointestinal and breast cancer cell lines.
