Overview

Sclera (dimethyl fumarate) is a small molecule oral medication developed by Hikma Pharmaceuticals as a generic version of Tecfidera for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). It is marketed under the brand names Sclera and Marovarex in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The drug is formulated as delayed-release gastro-resistant hard capsules in 120mg and 240mg strengths. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) mediated antioxidative response pathway, which provides cytoprotective effects and modulates the immune response. Hikma has conducted observational studies to evaluate the real-world effectiveness, safety, and impact on quality of life for patients using this generic formulation in routine clinical practice.
