Overview

Scleremo is a sclerosing agent composed of a mixture of glycerin and chromic alum (often described as 72% chromated glycerin). It is primarily used in phlebology for the treatment of small varicose veins and telangiectasias (spider veins), and has been investigated for the management of gastric varices. Scleremo acts as a chemical irritant and osmotic sclerosant that destroys the vascular endothelium upon injection. This localized damage triggers a thrombotic process followed by fibrosis and eventual occlusion of the target vessel. Compared to more potent detergents like sodium tetradecyl sulfate, Scleremo is considered a milder sclerosant with a lower incidence of skin necrosis and post-sclerotherapy hyperpigmentation, though its high viscosity can require higher injection pressures.
