Overview

Sclerosing foam is a formulation of a sclerosing agent (typically a detergent-based chemical such as polidocanol or sodium tetradecyl sulfate) that is mixed with air or another gas to create a foamy texture. This foam is injected directly into abnormal veins—most commonly varicose veins and spider veins—to induce endothelial damage, leading to vein closure through fibrosis and scarring. The foamed nature of the solution allows for greater surface contact with the vessel wall compared to liquid formulations, making it especially effective for larger or deeper veins. Sclerosing foam works by irritating the inner lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. It is used both for medical indications (such as chronic venous insufficiency and venous leg ulcers) and cosmetic purposes[3][5][7]. The procedure is minimally invasive, typically performed in an outpatient setting under ultrasound guidance.
