Overview

SCNT-hES-RPE is an investigational cell therapy consisting of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) that were generated via somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Developed by CHA University and CHA Biotech, the therapy is intended to treat advanced dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The procedure involves the subretinal transplantation of these SCNT-derived RPE cells to replace damaged or lost endogenous RPE, which is critical for the maintenance of photoreceptor cells. By restoring the RPE layer, the therapy aims to halt the progression of geographic atrophy and preserve or improve visual function in patients with advanced AMD. The use of SCNT to derive the source stem cells is a distinctive approach intended to potentially allow for better immunological matching or the study of specific disease phenotypes.
