Scolmin

Scolmin is an antispasmodic medication containing the active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide (also known as scopolamine butylbromide). Developed and marketed by the Filipino pharmaceutical company Nutramedica, it is a quaternary ammonium derivative of scopolamine that acts as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. By inhibiting these receptors on smooth muscle cells, Scolmin effectively reduces spasms in the gastrointestinal, biliary, and genitourinary tracts. It is specifically formulated as an injectable (IV/IM) for the acute relief of severe gastrointestinal spasms, abdominal colic, renal colic, and bladder spasms. Due to its high polarity, the drug is poorly absorbed into the systemic circulation and does not cross the blood-brain barrier, which limits its action primarily to peripheral smooth muscle and reduces the risk of central nervous system side effects.
