Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NPC-22 is a transdermal patch formulation of scopolamine (also known as hyoscine) being developed by Nobelpharma for the treatment of chronic sialorrhea (excessive salivation). Scopolamine is a belladonna alkaloid that functions as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. By inhibiting these receptors in the salivary glands, NPC-22 blocks the parasympathetic stimulation that triggers saliva production, thereby reducing hypersalivation. This therapeutic approach is particularly relevant for patients with neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), where drooling is a common and distressing symptom. Nobelpharma has advanced NPC-22 into Phase 2/3 clinical trials in Japan to evaluate its efficacy and safety in this patient population.
