Overview

Scopoletin is a naturally occurring coumarin derivative found in various nootropic herbs, such as *Convolvulus pluricaulis* and *Evolvulus alsinoides*. It acts as a potent antioxidant and neuroprotective agent, particularly studied for its potential in managing Parkinson's disease. Its primary mechanism involves maintaining cellular redox homeostasis by enhancing the levels of reduced glutathione (GSH). This is achieved through the efficient recycling of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and the inhibition of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), an enzyme responsible for glutathione catabolism. In preclinical models, scopoletin has demonstrated the ability to protect dopaminergic neurons from oxidative stress, restore mitochondrial function, and improve motor coordination. Additionally, it has been shown to alleviate the long-term oxidative toxicity associated with L-DOPA therapy, suggesting potential as a combinatorial treatment to enhance the efficacy of dopamine recharging regimens.
