Overview

Scorpion venom is a complex natural secretion produced by various species of scorpions, containing a diverse mixture of peptides, proteins, enzymes, and small molecules. It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is currently under investigation for several potential therapeutic applications. Laboratory studies have identified components with antinociceptive (pain-relieving), anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. Notably, chlorotoxin—a peptide from the deathstalker scorpion—has shown the ability to bind selectively to tumor cells and cross the blood-brain barrier; it is being developed as a targeting agent for brain tumors and as a shuttle to deliver drugs into the brain. Other peptides derived from scorpion venom have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical models of arthritis by delivering anti-inflammatory drugs directly to joint cartilage. Additionally, synthetic versions of certain venom compounds exhibit potent antibacterial activity against drug-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis while sparing healthy tissue. Despite these promising findings in laboratory settings, there are no approved pharmaceutical products based on whole scorpion venom itself; marketed products like Escozine or Vidatox lack clinical evidence or regulatory approval for cancer or other diseases[1][2][5][6][7][8].
