Scotchbond Universal Adhesive

Scotchbond Universal Adhesive is a seventh-generation, single-bottle dental adhesive system developed by 3M ESPE. It is designed for versatility, allowing for use in total-etch, self-etch, and selective-etch techniques. In the clinical context of treating dentin hypersensitivity, such as in studies conducted at Dow University of Health Sciences, it is applied topically to exposed dentin surfaces. The adhesive works by infiltrating and occluding open dentinal tubules, creating a physical seal that prevents the hydrodynamic movement of intratubular fluid. This mechanism effectively blocks the transmission of external stimuli (like cold or air) to the pulp nerves, thereby reducing pain. The formulation typically includes the 10-MDP monomer for chemical bonding to hydroxyapatite and the Vitrebond copolymer for moisture tolerance.
