Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SCPI-1 is a small molecule inhibitor of sterol carrier protein-2 (SCP-2). Originally identified as a mosquito larvicide that blocks cholesterol uptake, SCP-2 was later discovered to act as an intracellular binding and transport protein for endocannabinoids (eCBs) in mammals. By inhibiting SCP-2, SCPI-1 blocks endocannabinoid transport, thereby increasing circulating endocannabinoid tone and cannabinoid receptor-1 (CB1R) activity. SCPI-1 has been investigated preclinically for the treatment of multidimensional opioid withdrawal symptoms, where it has demonstrated efficacy in alleviating somatic signs of withdrawal in rat models. It has also been studied for its ability to inhibit dengue virus replication in mosquito cells by disrupting cholesterol trafficking.
