Overview

Scutellaria baicalensis extract is a preparation obtained from the roots of the Scutellaria baicalensis plant, commonly known as Chinese skullcap or Baikal skullcap. The extract is rich in bioactive flavonoids, notably baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin, among others. It demonstrates a variety of **pharmacological effects** including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and antitumor activities. Mechanistically, the extract and its main components modulate key cellular pathways such as NF-κB, COX-2, cell cycle regulators, and apoptosis mediators (including p53 and Bax). It has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for a broad range of indications—particularly for inflammatory, infectious, allergic, and certain neoplastic conditions. The extract acts primarily through its flavonoid constituents, which scavenge reactive oxygen species and modulate inflammatory and apoptotic signaling.
